Meditation for the Day

Our addiction gave us a twisted view of who was helpful to us, and who was causing us harm. That’s why we cherished the people who helped us get loaded, or whose misguided love made our drug use possible. By contrast, we despised and rejected those who refused to assist us in our using. They seemed heartless, letting us suffer all the consequences of our actions. Some turned us over to the authorities, the ones that we despised the most because they just wanted to lock us up. But now that we are in recovery, we are beginning to see all of this in a completely new light. It seems that we had this all wrong. The things we thought were hurtful, like suffering consequences, gave us a reason to get clean. The ones who gave in to us, thinking they were being helpful, actually made matters worse. That is why we should go back and thank the people who forced us to confront our addiction. They didn’t hurt us; they helped us to choose recovery.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I will realize how confused I was as to who was helping or hurting me during the time of my drug use. I thank God for the people whose actions let me experience the pain that motivates me to take my recovery seriously today.
